Inspired heavily by the events of the Civil Rights movement in addition to the Black Power movement events,Kerry James Marshall is an American painter and sculpture artist who seeks to relay his life experiences growing up through the use of dark abstraction like paintings. While his art style can best be described as a modern realist artist, Kerry James Marshall is often related to other artists' styles via the likes of Amy Hill, Mark Jacobson, and several others. Throughout the course of Kerry James Marshall's artistic career, he has shared his artwork with the public through canvas paintings and elaborate sculpture works. He has been published many times and many of his works are on exhibit in many of the greatest known galleries. While many of his works were done during the s and 90s, Marshall's best-known works include a superhero comic book completely based on African mythology, Voyager ( painting with a focus on race), and many other works based on American events.

Among his well-known works are Rhythm Mastr, a comic book that transposes African mythology to a contemporary city; the Garden Project, which draws on the idyllic-sounding names given to housing projects; the Lost Boys series, which portrays young, disenfranchised black men; and his gigantic stamps of Black Power slogans. This monograph offers the largest retrospective of his works in all media, from painting and sculpture to collage, photography and installation.

Whaw wat een tentoonstelling in M HKA en nog te zien in Antwerpen tot 2 februari Marshall is een leerling van Charles White, de pionier van de sociaal-realistische Afro-Amerikaanse kunst en op deze tentoonstelling is te zien hoe hij zijn leermeester qua veelzijdigheid ver overstegen heeft. Collages, animatiefilms, video, striptekeningen, installaties, houtsnedes, schilderijen, beschilderde doeken in vaak monumentale afmetingen.

Donkere figuren zijn de standaard in het werk van Marshall en hij leert ons met andere ogen te kijken. Het meest spannende vind ik hem als hij refereert aan de westerse schilderkunst, waar zwarte gezichten nagenoeg afwezig zijn. In &#;Black Star&#; zijn de vlakken en lijnen van de minimalist Frank Stella te zien, maar er spat een pin-up op uit het beeld. De titel is een hommage naar de Black Star Line, waarmee Marcus Garvey als voorvechter van de pan-Afrikaanse beweging Afro-Amerikanen die terug wilden keren naar Afrika, de kans gaf op een nieuw leven. Hij was een van de vroege voorvechters van de zwarte emancipatie beweging.

First, there was Leonardo the Musical, a mostly fictional production about Leonardo da Vinci and the Mona Lisa. Then there was the three-hour-long Starry Nights, about, yes, Vincent van Gogh. Next came Pop!, a piece of “canned camp,” as the New York Times called it, focused on Andy Warhol and the Factory, followed by Michelangelo the Musical (a no-brainer). And now … now, dear art lovers, there is Basquiat the Musical. (People really need to get more creative with titling.)
I suppose it was only a matter of time, but yes, Jean-Michel Basquiat is finally poised to take his place in the pantheon of musical theater. It’s almost surprising that it hasn’t happened sooner; Basquiat’s story has all the makings of the perfect drama: a rise from poverty to insane fame, drugs, early death — and he even dated Madonna!
